That Amazing Tiny Camera In Your Gut May Save Your Life

It may have been taken as Science Fiction by Orson Wells in “War of the Worlds”. And yet now a person can actually swallow a tiny miniature pill sized camera which can well save their live or at the least reassure that their health is well or that they can be well treated or be reassured about their stomach or intestinal diseases and conditions.

The tiny “pill camera: is now being heralded as one of the best medical imaging devices available today for observing the entire small bowel and potentially revealed a previously undiagnosed tumor or even bleeding or emerging cancer or cancers in the digestive tract.

The technology and technologies are called “Video Capsule Endoscopy”. It has been approved now in the United States by the Federal Drug Agency (F.D.A.). This “Video Capsule Endoscopy” has been done in a limited number of specialized and trained medical centers in the U.S. and is now in the process of being spread to more medical centers. The process is becoming more and more routine. Indeed this little pill tablet camera has become called: one of the most revolutionary advances in the field of stomach medicine (gastroenterology) in the last 40 years”.

Capsule endscopy involves swallowing a simple plastic capsule, which is the size of a large vitamin tablet or capsule, which contains a small disposable camera that takes pictures of a patient’s digestive system. Approximately eight hours later, high resolution color images are available to your doctor that allow unprecedented views of the small intestine. These photos and pictures can lead to much more accurate diagnoses of medical conditions that may affect yourself or your friends or family members such as Crohn’s disease and ulcers. Even a condition called polyposis (which is a terrible condition which can lead to colon cancer and vascular problems) can be more accurately diagnosed.

How indeed does this miniature camera work? Sort of like a “Candid Camera “of the gut. The capsule itself contains the most tiny, miniature video camera, a light, a battery and a transmitter. Rather amazing when you think of it. The patient swallows the tiny capsule simply by taking a glass of water. Nothing more, No anesthesia or sedation is required. A number of sensors are attached to the person’s torso and begin to record the images captured by the camera. All of this is non invasive. The patient spends the next eight hours or so (which is the time it generally takes for the capsule to move through the whole small intestine) wearing the recording device and going about his or her normal business and activities.

The data recorder is then removed easily from the patient. The recorded images are next downloaded simply to a computer – just as your teenager easily downloads songs and music to his iPod. Approximately 50,000 images all in all are combined into a movie like file for the doctors and the medical treatment team to view and interpret to help the patient with their gastrointestinal problems and concerns. In the end the tablet itself is not captured or reused. It is just disposed of normally.

In the end the person is helped with this modern technology in a way that not long ago would been of considered more than science fiction.
